Ozempic & Wegovy Linked to Vision Loss? Shocking New Study Reveals Risks

A recent study published in Obesity Research & Clinical Practice has identified a potential link between semaglutide-based medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)—a rare but serious eye condition that can lead to sudden, painless vision loss. Researchers used data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and conducted a disproportionality analysis, which revealed a significant reporting signal between semaglutide and NAION. The study found higher Reporting Odds Ratio (ROR) and Proportional Reporting Ratio (PRR) for semaglutide compared to other GLP-1 receptor agonists. While the exact mechanism of NAION remains uncertain, experts suggest that vascular effects may play a role. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently reviewing these findings to determine whether regulatory action is needed.
